A different river each day, lunch on the bank, and dinner waiting back at the lodge.
That’s the idea behind our new River Hopping Adventure from Long Valley Lodge: five full days exploring northern Iceland’s trout and char waters, with one comfortable base throughout the trip.
The first departures run August 15–21 and August 21–27, 2027, with further dates potentially extending the program into September.
For anglers who like exploring
There’s something enjoyable about arriving at unfamiliar water. You spend the first few minutes watching the current, looking for holding spots, and deciding how to approach the river.
This program gives you that experience each day.
Our fishing destinations include remote waters in the Northern Highlands, the Svartá trout beat, Kolka, Hjaltadalsá, and Hofsá/Runukvísl. Each brings something different to the trip, from the landscape around you to the tactics you use.
The fishing can be technical, and anglers should come ready to adapt. Single-handed rods and light double-handed rods both have a role, whether you’re working through a stretch with nymphs or swinging streamers.
Trout, char, and a chance at the grand slam
Arctic char and brown trout are the main focus, and their spawning colours add to their appeal at this time of year.
Kolka also offers the chance of Atlantic salmon. For anyone hoping to catch Iceland’s three principal freshwater game fish during one trip, that brings the possibility of a grand slam.
There’s no promise of catching all three. The attraction is the opportunity, and the variety of water you’ll fish along the way.

Explore by day, settle in by night
River hopping doesn’t mean moving your bags every morning.
You’ll stay at Long Valley Lodge for all six nights. After breakfast, you’ll head out with your guide for the day’s destination, have lunch beside the river, and fish through the afternoon before returning for dinner.
The lodge sits beside the Blanda River near Blönduós. Every bedroom has a private bathroom, an in-house chef prepares meals, and there’s a hot tub and sauna for the evenings.
It’s a comfortable place to return to, compare notes with the other anglers, and get ready for the next day.
