Battle Hill Summer Program

Sea-run brown trout, big water, and hovercraft access to the lower Skaftá

Our new summer program brings a different approach to fishing from Battle Hill Lodge. Alongside our usual fisheries, we’ll use a hovercraft to reach stretches of the lower Skaftá that are otherwise extremely difficult to access.

Running from late July into August, the program opens up more of the lower river to our anglers. Both single-handed and double-handed rods are suitable here, giving you options for how you approach the water.

The fishing

The Skaftá system is home to the sea-run brown trout that make Battle Hill’s spring and fall fishing so special. For summer, we’re expanding our reach onto the lower main river.

Access has always been a challenge here. The hovercraft will allow us to reach water that is difficult to approach by conventional means, opening up more options for our guides and anglers.

Guests will also fish Battle Hill’s established waters, including Vatnamót, Fossálar, and Geirlandsá. Fishing in these areas can be hit or miss this early in the season, and we want to be clear about that. This summer program has its own character: big water, different access, and a strong emphasis on Spey fishing.

Our guides will plan each day around conditions and available fishing options.

Why late July and August?

Sea-run brown trout begin their upstream runs in late July and early August, with fish continuing to enter the system into late September.

In the upper sections of our fisheries, we’ll be targeting the early runners. Farther down the system, sea-run browns move in and out of the ocean throughout the season, making the lower Skaftá an important part of this summer program.

The hovercraft gives us access to these lower stretches at a time when fishing farther upstream can still be variable. It expands our options and lets us explore a different part of the fishery as the runs get underway.

Who is this trip for?

This program will appeal to anglers who enjoy exploring new water and fishing for sea-run brown trout in a varied river system.

You don’t need to fish with a two-handed rod to enjoy the lower Skaftá. Single-handed rods work well too, while anglers who enjoy Spey casting and swinging flies will have opportunities to use those techniques. Our guides can help you choose equipment and an approach suited to the conditions.
